WOE UNTO US 5

Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

I started this week with this verse.  While it might not apply to anyone reading this we know that it is becoming a popular attitude in our country today.

We live in a country that is supposed to be governed by the people.  If our government is corrupt it is because our people are either corrupt, ignorant, or do not care about what type leaders we have in charge.  I believe it is a combination of all three.

As I study the scripture I know what the Bible says it will be like in the last days.  It will be like it is now.  The most important thing you can do is trust Jesus as your Lord and Savior. The next most important thing you can do is share the plan of salvation with those who you come in contact with.

Pray and look up.  Your redemption is drawing near.

WOE UNTO US 4

Isaiah 29:15 Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?

Nobody will know.  Who will it hurt?  That is the beginning of so many sins that usually come back to haunt the person committing them.  Sin has a built in penalty.  The reason it is sin is because it is bad for you.

Our sins not only effect us, they effect all those around us.  God knows what we are doing at all times.  He never sleeps and he never blinks. There are many today that seem to think that whatever they do is alright as long as they don't get caught.  When their sins do come to light they act surprised or shocked and can't figure out where they went wrong.

Many today are continuing on a downward spiral away from God, thinking that their sins are hidden and they will never be caught but there will come a day of reckoning, if not in this life, it will come when we stand before God to give an account.

WOE UNTO US 3

Isaiah 10:1 Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness which they have prescribed;

I am not a historian or political writer and I hope those reading the devotionals this week don't think I have started a political blog.  I try to steer clear of politics as much as I can but there are some things I believe God's people need to be aware of and need to be praying about.

I personally believe the above scripture describes the out of control government that we the people have allowed to come to power in our Country.  We are to blame because we remain silent, we fail to pray, and mostly it doesn't even seem to bother us very much.

We have the Supreme Court making laws, which is unconstitutional,  we have the Legislature trying to enforce laws, which is unconstitutional, and we have the executive branch writing orders and putting them into effect and then refusing to try to enforce the laws that have been legally enacted.

I don't have a solution. I do know we have problems and the only way we are going to solve these problems is by humbling our selves and praying and we must turn from our wicked ways and  repent of our sins. That is the only way that we can avoid the pitfalls of unrighteous decrees and grievous laws.

WOE UNTO US 2

Isaiah 5:21 Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!

This might be hard to believe but there is a social class of people who think they know what is best for everyone else.  They believe that if you don't agree with them you are not only wrong but you should be censored and punished.

This is nothing new.  Socialism and communism have been around for ages and it has always touted equality as it's goal.  Strangely enough there has always been an elite circle who felt that they were smarter than everyone else so they should be the ones to decide how wealth was distributed.  Naturally being in charge would entitle them to a larger share of the wealth than those actually producing the wealth.

This form of government has never worked because those in charge were wise in their own conceit and prudent in their own sight.  Our own Nation which has had the greatest lifestyle on Earth is quickly moving in that direction.  It has always failed and there is no reason why it should not continue to fail.

We should look to Almighty God and pray for direction and realize that our wisdom is foolishness compared to His.

Woe Unto Us 1

Isaiah 5:20 Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

When I think of someone in a state of woe I imagine them with in a deflated condition as if someone had let the air out of them and they were collapsing in on themselves.  That might seem a little dramatic but the word woe just seems to describe a terrible state of despair.

According to the above scripture, payday is coming to a lot of people someday, especially since being politically correct became so popular.  Things that weren't even spoken of out loud when I was a child have become passionate causes for the devil's crowd today.

Once Christianity was considered a strong positive attribute but now the politically correct paint it as an evil thing at worst and as a handicap at best.  This verse was written for the News Media and the rest of the politically correct.

Even If I was not able to define woe correctly I am sure those who find themselves overwhelmed by it will recognize it.

Half A Worm

Psalm 54:6 I will freely sacrifice unto thee: I will praise thy name, O LORD; for it is good.

The old joke goes "Do you know what is worse than biting into an apple and finding a worm?"  Of course the answer is biting into an apple and finding "half a worm".  A thing like that can kind of spoil the rest of your day if you let it. We are subject to go around the rest of the day still acting like we taste worm in our mouth when we probably never tasted it in the first place.

Sometimes we let something unpleasant ruin our whole day. Instead of being thankful that we had an apple in the first place we concentrate on the worm.  If we are filled with thanksgiving for all the
great things God has blessed us with we can learn to overcome the "half a worm" days that we have.
Just get some mouthwash, check your apple next time (I always cut mine in slices and look at them) and thank God for all His blessings because He is good.

TAKE HEED THAT YOU DON'T GET TOO TIRED

TAKE HEED THAT WE DO NOT LEAVE THE SERVICE OF GOD

Heb 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

Many today seem to be falling away from serving God.  Recently a pastor and I had a discussion about this same subject.  He commented that he felt like that many were never saved in the first place.  I believe that is a possibility but I am very careful about judging another person's relationship with Christ.  The only way you have of knowing or thinking that I am a Christian is by taking my word for it.  I hope you can also see some evidence of it in my life.

The church is very important to God.  Your participation in a scriptural New Testament Church is very important.  It is through the church that God receives glory.  If you are in a church that you don't believe is scriptural by all means find one that is.

I believe that a persons commitment to a church is very important.  I believe you should give your very best to the service of your church.

One question I ask a lot is, "If your church were made up of people just like you, what kind of church would you have?"

Take heed.  The ministry of the church is dependent upon dedicated born again Christians.

WHAT ARE WE TIRED OF?

Galatians 6:9 And let us not be WEARY in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
Sometimes we complain of being tired.. or tired of it.  What are we tired of?

We can get tired of Church and all the activities, especially if we are just kind of playing at it anyway and not putting our whole hearts into it.

We can get tired of carrying more than our share of the load but we probably wouldn't have to do that if we were properly discipling new converts to take our place some day.

We can get tired of standing alone and facing all the evils in the world, unless we open our eyes and realize that there are thousands more who are standing and fighting the same enemy.. Satan.

We can get tired of not seeing results but when we finally realize that we are to just be faithful and leave the results to God it helps to lighten the load.

Sometimes when we become tired we just need to remember that the Harvest will come some day and none of the work done out of love for the Lord will be in vain.

TIRED..OR TIRED OF IT?

Galatians 6:9 And let us not be WEARY in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

I can't really remember what the circumstances were but it was one of those hectic periods that we sometimes have when we are working in the church when a young lady made a thought provoking comment.  She said, "I don't know if I am tired or just tired of it."

This lady is a fine Christian lady and is still faithfully serving the Lord and although I haven't seen her in over 20 years I know she is still active and involved in the Lord's work.  I think she must have been tired and I am thankful she was not tired of it.

There are times when we can all become tired. It seems today that there is always somewhere we have to go, or something we have to do and when we finish it all starts all over again.  Sadly if we don't see results we might get past being tired and become tired of it.

This scripture is reassures me that if I will just keep on doing the right thing, the right results will come.

Just remember, just because you are tired doesn't mean you have to be tired of it.

RENEWED STRENGTH

Isaiah 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be WEARY; and they shall walk, and not faint.

I confess.. I get tired easy.  I was able for years to get by on about 4 hours sleep each night and I still seemed to have plenty of strength and energy to do anything that needed to be done the other 20 hours of the day.

My lack of energy now is not from a lack of zeal and enthusiasm but from age and health matters. I usually get up around 5:00 am each morning but it takes me a while before I can really build up any steam to get much done.  The exception to this is Sunday Morning when I usually sleep a little later and I wake up with an excitement and desire to meet with my church family and worship the Lord with them.

I am able to preach without becoming exhausted and out of breath and even though I am tired in the afternoon... it is a good tired.

Maybe that that is all because on Sunday we are truly concentrating on waiting upon the Lord and He renews our strength.

Fleeting Memories

Psalm 144:4 Man is like to vanity: his days are as a shadow that passeth away.

I will turn 63 years old this month.  Where did all that time go.  It doesn't seem that long ago that I was starting to school. It was only an instant from then that I was learning to drive, getting a job, finishing High School.

My wife and I have been married 42 years.  How can that be it seems like only a few years since we stood before the preacher, both of us so nervous that neither of us knew what we were agreeing to.

My son will turn 40 soon.  How can I have a middle aged son?  My baby girl is...well never mind but her baby just turned into a teenager. I have officially become an old man and I didn't even realize it was happening.  It happened so fast.

We don't realize how short life is and how many opportunities pass us by until we are in our "senior discount" years and looking back.  It is then we realize how brief our time on earth is.

None of us know how much longer we will live but I am pretty sure that I am way over the halfway mark. Today got here so fast and I am sure the end will get here even faster.  That makes it much more important to make the best of what time I have left.  That is true for each of us.

The point is that we should make our lives count and the way we can do that is to commit what we have left to Jesus.

Christians In Politics

Psalm 144:15 Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.

I keep reading and hearing that Christians have no business getting into politics.  Many say that we should just stay out of it and mind our own business.  When I read or hear these things I think of what our nation would be like if that had been true.

Many of our early settlers would not have even come to America if they were not seeking religious freedom and I don't mean freedom from religion.  I mean that they wanted to worship in a way that they believed to be scriptural and were tired of being persecuted for it.

Our Declaration of Independence would never have been written in the way it was because it has several Christian references.  Our constitution would not have guaranteed us the freedom of religion that we are quickly losing without a strong Christian backing.
We probably would not even recognize our country if it were not for the strong Christian influence in our politics.  Even the most liberal of colleges were started as schools to train men for the ministry.  Sadly they have strayed far from the intentions of their founders.

My opinion is that when we take Christian influence out of politics we are destined to live in a country run by ungodly people.  I don't think that would make us a happy people.

Team Work

Nehemiah 4:6 So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.

I have always loved this verse and have used it many times while preaching.  One of the things I have noticed is that most churches have a lot of workers but sometimes they are not working together as a team.

Just recently I have been selling some craft work at a local Farmers Market.  We meet each Saturday morning at a few minutes after 7:00 am and are set up and ready to go by 7:30.  When the truck arrives with the awnings to go over our booths everyone starts setting them up.  Once the awnings are up there are some tables furnished and everyone works until these are set up.  I furnish my own tables and the others always help me set them up.  Only after everything is ready for everyone do people start displaying their produce and crafts.

When it is time to break down our booths the same thing happens and people don't begin to leave until we are all packed and ready to go.  This is great teamwork.

Wouldn't it be great if we could all work together as a team in our churches.  It doesn't matter WHO turns on the air and lights as long as they get turned on.  It doesn't matter WHO does a lot of things.  Teamwork means that I have work to do as long as anyone on the team has work to do.

IN HIS IMAGE

Psalms 139:14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

I was reading a news report from a Christian publication recently that stated that many scientist are under attack because they believed in the theory of intelligent design of the universe.  Just to give you an idea of how old I am, when I was in school most science teachers refused even to discuss evolution.

In other news we read of drug problems, problems with youth, problems with self esteem and problems with respect of others.  It kind of makes me wonder if all this evolution propaganda might be having an effect on people.  When you are taught that you come from a long line of animals and that the most recent is a monkey it doesn't give you much reason to have self esteem or respect for anyone else.

On the other hand I believe
Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

I also believe
Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Maybe if we all realized that we are fearfully and wonderfull made in the image of God we would strive more to conform to that image instead of the image of the decendants of animals and beasts.

SPECIAL PEOPLE

Philippians 2:3 Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.

You have probably seen them.  They are the ones that park in the fire lanes or take up two parking spaces so that their car doesn't get scratched.  You can find them in the check out line in the lane for twenty items or less with an overflowing basket.  They are the ones who feel that the rules don't apply to them.

My wife and I have started to call them special people because we are certain that they feel that they are so special that manners, politeness, and other peoples feelings come second to their own desires.

One thing I have noticed about Special People like that is that they are seldom smiling. They seem to have a chip on their shoulder and are just daring the world to say anything to them about their unacceptable behavior.  It might just be my opinion but I believe that they are miserable and that their lives are filled with strife and there is an awful emptiness there.

Maybe, just maybe, if they would humble themselves and think of others before themselves it would give them a feeling of fulfillment and they would learn to smile.  I know that making others feel better certainly makes me happy.

SPIRITUAL EXAMINATION 5

(2 Cor 13:5)  Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

WE MIGHT NEED A MENTAL EVALUATION

Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

What do you think about?  What do you really have your mind on most of the time.  I am afraid that I have to confess that I my thoughts are not always Christ centered and yet I know that they should be.

We as Christians often have a very short attention span and the shiny objects of the world seem to attract our attention.  It is so much easier to focus on ourselves and even our families than it is to have our minds focused on our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Maybe we need to retrain our minds and as in any other type of training we do it in stages.  We need to spend some time focusing on Jesus and asking ourselves not only what He would do, but what would He have us to do.  The more time we spend actively trying to focus on Him, the more likely it will be for us to stay focused on Him automatically.

Examine your own mind.  Put Jesus in the center of your thoughts, your hopes and your dreams. It will change the way you think, the way you act, and the way you live.

Spiritual Examination 4

(2 Cor 13:5)  Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

AN EYE AND EAR EXAMINATION

(Mark 8:18)  Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?

Some people just seem to be blind to the spiritual truth in the Bible. They have trouble seeing things from a spiritual perspective. It is like the old saying;" They cant see the forest for the trees". They have eyes but they only see what suits their purpose.

I am amazed at how many times people will listen to something without ever really hearing it. I have had people tell me after a sermon many times that they have never heard something before.

Sometimes I know better because I know they have been there when I said the exact same thing. I guess they are telling the truth in away. Just because something is said in your presence doesn't mean you actually hear it. Most people hear what they want to hear.

Have you examined your eyes and ears lately? Are seeing and hearing what God would have you to?

Spiritual Examination 3

(2 Cor 13:5)  Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

CHECK OUR TEMPERATURE

(Rev 3:16)  So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

We all know people who are selfish and self centered and we refer to them as cold and indifferent. No one wants to be thought of that way, yet we don't mind being thought of as warm and friendly. Jesus said it is better to be cold than merely warm.

When d hear someone refer to their church as a warm and friendly church I usually get an uneasy feeling. I know that Jesus doesn't want usto be cold but he doesn't want us to be just warm either. He wants us to serve Him with a burning passion and a heart on fire for him.

Have you taken your spiritual temperature lately?

Spiritual Examination 2

(2 Cor 13:5)  Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

SOMETIMES WE NEED A STRESS TEST

If a cardiologist thinks there may be something wrong with a patient's heart he will sometimes give them a stress test. When the heart is put under stress if there is a problem it will usually show up.

The same is true spiritually as well. When things are going well and we don't seem to be facing any great difficulties it is easy to say we have faith. It is easy to trust God in the good times. It is during the times of extreme stress that any problems with our heart ( spiritually speaking ) will make themselves known.

How do you react to problems? Do you get all upset and panic? Do you become angry, resentful or bitter? This could be a warning that you are not as spiritually healthy as you should be.

Remember, no matter what you are facing, you have God on your side. Whatever it is will be better handled by trusting Him. Having a heart filled with faith is the way to beat the stress test.

Spiritual Examination 1

(2 Cor 13:5)  Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

Introduction:  We all know that occasionally we need to get a physical examination to see what condition our body is in.  Shouldn't we also take time for a Spiritual examination to check our relationship with our Savior.

A HEART EXAMINATION

(Psa 26:2)  Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my reins and my heart.

We need to have regular heart examinations.

(Mat 5:8)  Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall  see God.

When we fill our hearts with love for the Lord Jesus Christ it drives the impurities from our heart. Once in a science class the teacher placed an empty jar on a table and asked the class how he could get all the air out of the jar.

Some suggested using a vacuum. Some thought to try other ways but there didn't seem to be a solution. When everyone had given up the teacher took a pitcher of water and slowly poured it into the jar until it was full. All the air was gone.

In a similar fashion the same is true of our hearts. The way to keep the heart pure is to keep it full of love for our Savior.

SHARING THE WORD 5

Psalm 40:8-10 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart. (9) I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest. (10) I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.

SHARING GOD'S FAITHFULNESS

Sometimes my faith is very week.  I am thankful that God's faithfulness is never diminished even when I am at my weakest. God does not turn His back on us and He will never let us down.

Sometimes people become angry at God or discouraged from serving him because God doesn't always react to situations the way we want Him too.  Maybe we need to step back and remember that He is God and we are not.  He sees the big picture while we see "through a glass darkly" or in simpler terms, our vision is blurred.

There are many things that we can not understand about God because we are temporal while God is eternal.  We are so often carnal and God is Spirit.

No matter how the world might shake their fist and rail at our God, in the end, He is still God. He doesn't change with the times.  He never goes out of style.  He will never be old fashioned and out of touch with what is going on in the world. If God makes a promise, He doesn't change His mind.  Now that is faithful.

Share God's faithfulness with the world.  The best way to do that is to show the world that you trust Him completely.

SHARING THE WORD 4

Psalm 40:8-10 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart. (9) I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest. (10) I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.

WE REFRAIN FROM SHARING

"I wish I had said something!"  That is a statement that I have both made and heard so many times that I couldn't begin to count them.  Many opportunities arise for us to witness and we feel that we should but we just keep our mouths shut.

Why do we refrain from witnessing to people.  Sometimes we are afraid that we might say something wrong.  If we talk about Jesus and what He has done for us it is hard to be wrong.  That is what witnessing is, giving an eye witness account of what Jesus has done for us in our lives.  It is hard to get that wrong.

We might refrain from witnessing because we are afraid that we will offend someone or because we think that we might do more harm than good.  People are certainly going to be offended when they are condemned and realize that you knew how they could be saved and never told them.  As far as being worse off, you can't be much worse off than to be lost and on your way to Hell.

Don't refrain from sharing the Love of Jesus with those you come in contact with.  You might be the only messenger they ever encounter.
