WAYS TO RESIST THE DEVIL 4

RESIST THE DEVIL BY BEING AGGRESSIVE

As Christians we are often way to passive. We hear the Word. We pray. We study and then we do not go out and do anything with it. We have a wonderful treasure. The Salvation is the greatest gift a man can receive and we should be sharing that gift with the world. If we share it our gift is not diminished in the least. Quiet the contrary, our faith is strengthened.

When we win a lost soul for Christ we are dealing a huge blow to Satan. We are not only defeating him in that instance but we are weakening his influence and strengthening the Army of God.

If we are to truly resist the devil we should be winning the lost to Christ. This glorifies God and defeats the devil. He doesn't like to be around those that defeat him.

WAYS TO RESIST THE DEVIL 3

RESIST THE DEVIL BY HAVING A STRONG PRAYER LIFE

Luke 11:9 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

Sometimes we seem powerless against the devil and many times it is because we are lacking in our prayer life. There is power in prayer. We need the power of prayer in our daily life. We need the strength that can only come from a strong prayer life just to help us resist the devil one day at a time.

Prayer brings us consecration. When we are truly praying we are set apart from the world and from it's influence. Effectual fervent prayer helps us to shut out temptation and connect with the power and will of our Heavenly Father.

Prayer helps us to have victory. Nothing in the world makes Satan tremble like the bended knees of God's children in earnest and sincere prayer.

If you are going to resist the devil you need to have a strong prayer life.

WAYS TO RESIST THE DEVIL 2

RESIST THE DEVIL BY GOING TO CHURCH

Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some ; but exhorting : and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

The Church helps us resist the devil. We can go and hear the Word of God preached and it strengthens us against temptation. If we have yielded to temptation we are convicted by the Holy Spirit of the sin in our lives and are able to repent.

When I was a young man I ran from God's call to preach. I did not want to preach and I did not like the conviction I felt when I was in church. During the years that I was running from God I did attend church a few times. I remember that each time I went, no matter what was preached, no matter who was preaching, I felt a strong conviction by the Holy Spirit.

When I eventually did start attending church on a regular basis the conviction became even stronger until I was willing to submit myself to God's will. It certainly turned my life in a completely different direction.

Not only did I have the Word preached to me and the conviction of the Holy Spirit, I found the encouragement and support that I needed. The Christian brothers and sisters in the church helped me and prayed for me and made resisting the devil so much easier.

If you really want to resist the devil you need to be active in a church that believes the Bible and preaches the Word of God.

WAYS TO RESIST THE DEVIL 1

James 4:7-10 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (8) Draw nigh to God, and he ill draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. (9) Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. (10) Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.

The world is full of temptation and Satan is behind every bit of it. I believe that he knows that his time on Earth is short and he is busy trying to wreck every life and destroy every soul that he possibly can. The truth is that Satan hates mankind.

It might seem strange, especially to those who follow him so closely, but he even hates those who worship him. He knows what his end will be and it is his desire to destroy as many people as he can before he comes to that disastrous end.

The next few devotionals will be some scriptures that will help you to resist the devil so that he will flee from you. The first step of course is to "submit yourselves to God". If you are truly to resist the devil you need to take the first step in submitting to God by accepting Jesus as your Savior and allowing Him to be Lord of your life. You can only draw near to God, through His only begotten Son, Jesus.

I hope you pay close attention to the next few devotionals and they strengthen you in your daily battles in your own spiritual warfare.

THREE WHO DIDN'T SELL OUT

1 Kings 21:3 And NABOTH said to Ahab, The LORD forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee.

Naboth had a vineyard that Ahab wanted desperately. He offered him a good price but Naboth would not sell. His heritage and his family meant more to him than the money he would have received from Ahab. His refusing to sell caused Ahab to have him killed and the land taken but he has gone down in history as one who was unwilling to sell out at any price. He is truly in the upper class of those who stuck to their convictions.

Daniel was unwilling to compromise his beliefs and was thrown into the lions den. God shut up the mouths of the lions and Daniel rose to great heights in the kingdom because he was unwilling to sell out.

The same is true for Shadrach, Meschach and Abednego. Unwilling to worship any but the true and living God they were cast into the fiery furnace but not even the smell of smoke was on them when they emerged. They were unwilling to sell out under any circumstances.

Too many are selling out too cheap. Stick to your convictions and do what is right. You may not even know how much it means right now but some day it will be revealed to you.

SELLING OUT TOO CHEAP 9

DON'T SELL YOURSELF CHEAP

Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree good for food, and that it pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

Don't let the eyes fool you into looking at something and thinking it is worth more than you might realize you will have to pay for it. Did you ever notice the commercials on TV always advertise beer using exciting and fun looking attractive people to entice you. Satan will always say look how good it looks.

Satan does not show you the end result. You never see people on the advertisements with a hangover or see neglected families and broken homes. Satan paints a beautiful picture but it is all a lie.

That first step is the one that leads you the rest of the way. If you never take it, you will never have to search for the right path back.

Just because you are tempted, doesn't mean you might as well give in. When you are enticed into sin don't try to drag others in with you.

Thankfully the Bible also is filled with others who didn't sell out too cheap. I will cover them in the next devotional.

SELLING OUT TOO CHEAP 8

PILATE SOLD OUT FOR PRESTIGE

Matthew 27:24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye .

By his own admission Pilate believed that Jesus was not guilty of anything but he washed his hands of the matter to please the crowd. That was the most famous hand washing in the history of the world.

He listened to the crowd. I see so many today that are doing things they really don't believe in so that can please the crowd. We see politicians catering to special interest groups even though they know what they stand for is wrong. They are selling out so they can get elected.

Pilate tried to wash his hands of the responsibility but that will never work. One day we will stand before an All Knowing Judge to give an account of our actions. Only the blood of Jesus can wash away the stains of our guilt.

Pilate tried to take the easy way out and now his name lives on in infamy as the judge who sold Jesus out.

SELLING OUT TOO CHEAP 7

ACHAN SOLD OUT ISRAEL BECAUSE OF COVETEOUSNESS Joshua 7:21 When I saw among the spoils a goodly Babylonish garment, and two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold of fifty shekels weight, then I coveted them, and took them; and, behold, they hid in the earth in the midst of my tent, and the silver under it. God had demanded that they destroy everything and take nothing for themselves. Achan disobeyed and when they next went to battle they were defeated because of "sin in the camp". It caused all of the people to suffer. The sight of that garment and of the silver and gold might be tempting to some of us today but it wasn't much when you know what it really cost him. He sold out for silver and gold just as many today are selling out for riches. Just as Achan tried to hide it men today try to hide their sin from God and man. It very seldom works. God knows our very thoughts and intents. Achan caused defeat to all Israel. When we harbor secret sin in our life we are not only selling our self out be we are selling out those around us too. SELLING OUT TOO CHEAP 6

Genesis 4:6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? CAIN SOLD OUT TO JEALOUSY Cain was like many people today. He believed in God but he would not believe God. He brought an offering that he had grown from the very ground that God had placed a curse upon. He tried to offer an unworthy sacrifice to God. Cain could easily have traded grain and the fruit of the ground to Able for an animal to sacrifice if he had not been too proud. Just like a lot of people today he was willing to make an offering but not willing to make a sacrifice. Cain let his jealousy and hate for his brother turn to murder. I am amazed at the number of times I hear on the news of family members killing or harming their own families. Who can know what motivates this kind of jealousy and hatred? I can only suppose that these people are selling their own lives so cheaply that they have no respect for the value of other people's lives. SELLING OUT TOO CHEAP 5

EVE WAS THE FIRST TO SELL OUT Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree good for food, and that it pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. SHE GAVE THE FRUIT TO ADAM The Bible tells us that Eve was deceived. The serpent beguiled her. This verse does not tell us that she had to go anywhere to find Adam. This verse says he was with her. I believe he was there all along while this was going on. He was doing just what we men are good at, just standing there watching to see what would happen and not doing anything to intervene. Eve then gave the fruit to Adam and he ate it. How many times have you ever had someone who was supposed to be a friend talk you into doing something you knew you should not do. You probably can not even count the times. One thing is for sure. When people get enticed into a sinful thing they want other people to join them in their sin. If misery loves company sin revels in it. When you sell out at as Eve did, you also sell out those you love and those who depend on you. Eve sold mankind for a bite of fruit. That seems pretty cheap doesn't it? Please feel free to contact me by email at shilohkosciusko@gmail.com with questions, comments or even suggestions for further devotional studies. Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree good for food, and that it pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. SHE ATE I can imagine Eve in the Garden as she took the fruit and held it in her hands. I believe it was beautiful or as the above verse says it was pleasant to the eyes. I believe it probably even felt good in her hands and was perfectly ripened. In my imagination I can almost smell it. Fruit has a wonderful smell to most people. That is why you see fruit scented air fresheners and fruit scented candles. I notice that I have never seen a turnip green or cabbage scented candle. Eve was enticed by all the fruit's qualities and it is almost possible to visualize her as she holds the fruit to her lips and takes a bite. An immediate change comes upon her. Just as God will ask them later "What have you done?", I believe at that moment she asks herself, "What have I done?". That is the question we ask when we sell out so cheap and lose our innocence. SELLING OUT TOO CHEAP 3

SHE TOOK One thing we need to understand as Christians is that it is not a sin to be tempted. I believe that if Eve had only admired the forbidden fruit and wondered about it that man might still be in the Garden of Eden. As is often the case though, she made a decision to disobey God. I hear so many people today who have fallen into sin say, "I didn't mean for this to happen." What they are really saying is "I knew I wasn't supposed to do it but I though I could get away with it." I know that is true for me. There have been times in my life that I knew what I was doing was wrong but I thought that I might just get away with it. So far I haven't gotten away with much that I wasn't supposed to do. Sin begins with that first step. A step of immorality can lead to a lifetime of shame and degradation. No one ever took that first drink of alcohol thinking that they would not be able to handle it. Drug addicts don't start out with wrecking their lives as their goal. They look and the desire builds up and then they take the first step that sometimes is way too far. SHE SAW The serpent deceived Eve into thinking that the forbidden fruit would make her equal with God. She knew that God had forbidden them to eat of the tree of "Knowledge of Good and Evil", yet she still let the serpent persuade her. She saw. I am sure it must have been a beautiful sight and it probably looked very delicious, and the thought of being as smart as God was truly tempting. There are certain things that I don't want to be around. I know my weaknesses and I don't even want to be near many things that I know might tempt me. Satan will use the things that look good to entice us. He makes sin look beautiful and alluring. If we look at many things and try to rationalize them we might just come to the conclusion that "it won't hurt to try it." But it will hurt. Sin always hurts. Not only does sin hurt us, it hurts those around us. Just look at those who have chosen a life of sin and see how it does affect those around them. Remember, it doesn't matter how good something looks. If God says to leave it alone it is best for you if you leave it alone. SELLING OUT TOO CHEAP 1

Genesis 25:28-34 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob. (29) And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint: (30) And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom. (31) And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. (32) And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? (33) And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. (34) Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright. In these verses we find that Esau sold something that was very important for a meal that was just enough to quench his appetite for a moment. Once it was gone he could never get it back. I personally feel that he sold out way too cheap. The next few devotionals will be about people who sold out too cheap. I believe that many today are selling out too cheaply. THE CHRISTIAN LIFESTYLE 5

1 Thessalonians 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil. When we live the Christian lifestyle we are supposed to set a good example to other Christians as well as to the rest of the world who is always watching. I am amazed at the number of Christian people who think it is fine to do what the world does and go where the world goes and then think it will not effect their testimony. Someone told me that I should go to the Casino and eat their buffet because it was very good and wasn't very expensive. I told them that I would not want to be seen going into any part of a casino. In the first place I don't want to contribute to their success in any way but if someone were to see me go in they would have no way of knowing that I was just going there to eat. We are to abstain from all appearance of evil. Living the Christian lifestyle means abstaining from all appearance of evil. THE CHRISTIAN LIFESTYLE 4

1 Thessalonians 5:19 Quench not the Spirit. THE CHRISTIAN LIFESTYLE SHOULD BE ONE RESPONSIVE TO THE HOLY SPIRIT As Christians we should be responsive to the Holy Spirit. God does not usually speak to us in great miracles or earth shattering events but with the still small voice. We need to let the Spirit guide us daily and not just on Sunday morning. Sometimes God will convict us that something is wrong and we quench the spirit to satisfy the flesh. We are to do just the opposite. We are to crucify the flesh and follow the leadership of the Spirit. It is through the leadership of the Holy Spirit that we are able to study, to worship, to witness and thereby glorify the Father and the Son. THE CHRISTIAN LIFESTYLE 2

1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing. A LIFESTYLE OF PRAYER Prayer should not be something the Christian takes lightly. If you remember the disciples never asked Jesus to teach them to preach, or to teach or many of the other things that Christians do but they did ask Him to teach them how to pray. They realized how important prayer was. Prayer is the way we pour out our hearts and thoughts to God. It is in times of prayer that we are open to His communication to us also. Prayer is as important to our spiritual life as air is to our physical life. When we don't have air for our bodies it is really hard on our physical bodies. The same is true for prayers and our spiritual life? We need to pray individually. I don't mean that we are just to tell people we will pray for them. I believe we should follow through and actually pray to God on their behalf. We also need to pray collectively. We should pray as families and churches and even prayer groups and circles. There is power in prayer. We need to pray faithfully, after all it is a part of the Christian Lifestyle. THE CHRISTIAN LIFESTYLE 1

I Thessalonians 5:17-22 Pray without ceasing. (18) In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. (19) Quench not the Spirit. (20) Despise not prophesyings. (21) Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. (22) Abstain from all appearance of evil. Introduction: We hear a lot today about lifestyles. We are told that we should be tolerant of other cultures. I think it is important for us to learn more about the style of life we should be living. It is easy to be caught up in current trends and one of the current trends is not to offend anyone no matter how much they stray from the teachings of God. Recently it seems that every culture and lifestyle is acceptable except the Christian Lifestyle. Customs might change. Society certainly changes and the things that are accepted in public seem to change with time. One thing that does not change is God's Word. The whole world will pass away and none of it will change. The next few devotionals are going to be dealing with the Christian lifestyle. I hope you receive a blessing from them. WANT OR NEED? 5

Philippians 4:19 But my God shall SUPPLY ALL YOUR NEED according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Psalm 23:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

I shall not want for rest-"He maketh me lie down in green pastures.

I shall not want for peace- "He leadeth me beside the still waters".

I shall not want for revival- "He restoreth my soul".

I shall not want for righteousness- Because it is His righteousness I am depending on.

I shall not be afraid of anything-Because He is with me and His rod and staff comfort me.

I shall not want for sustenance-"Because He prepares a table before me."

I shall not want for spiritual things because He anoints my head with oil.

I shall not want for refreshment because my cup runs over.

I shall not want for goodness and mercy for they will follow me all the days of my life.

I shall not worry about the future for I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

That pretty much takes care of my needs as well as my wants. How about you?
