SELLING OUT TOO CHEAP 3

EVE WAS THE FIRST TO SELL OUT

Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree good for food, and that it pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

SHE TOOK

One thing we need to understand as Christians is that it is not a sin to be tempted. I believe that if Eve had only admired the forbidden fruit and wondered about it that man might still be in the Garden of Eden.
As is often the case though, she made a decision to disobey God. I hear so many people today who have fallen into sin say, "I didn't mean for this to happen." What they are really saying is "I knew I wasn't supposed to do it but I though I could get away with it." I know that is true for me. There have been times in my life that I knew what I was doing was wrong but I thought that I might just get away with it. So far I haven't gotten away with much that I wasn't supposed to do.
Sin begins with that first step. A step of immorality can lead to a lifetime of shame and degradation. No one ever took that first drink of alcohol thinking that they would not be able to handle it. Drug addicts don't start out with wrecking their lives as their goal. They look and the desire builds up and then they take the first step that sometimes is way too far.

SELLING OUT TOO CHEAP 2

EVE WAS THE FIRST TO SELL OUT

Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree good for food, and that it pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

SHE SAW

The serpent deceived Eve into thinking that the forbidden fruit would make her equal with God. She knew that God had forbidden them to eat of the tree of "Knowledge of Good and Evil", yet she still let the sperpent persuade her.
She saw. I am sure it must have been a beautiful sight and it probably looked very delicious, and the thought of being as smart as God was truly tempting. There are certain things that I don't want to be around. I know my weaknesses and I don't even want to be near many things that I know might tempt me. Satan will use the things that look good to entice us. He makes sin look beautiful and alluring. If we look at many things and try to rationalize them we might just come to the conclusion that "it won't hurt to try it." But it will hurt. Sin always hurts.
Not only does sin hurt us, it hurts those around us. Just look at those who have chosen a life of sin and see how it does affect those around them. Remember, it doesn't matter how good something looks. If God says to leave it alone it is best for you if you leave it alone.

SELLING OUT TOO CHEAP 1

Genesis 25:28-34 And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob. (29) And Jacob sod pottage: and Esau came from the field, and he was faint: (30) And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom. (31) And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. (32) And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? (33) And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. (34) Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

In these verses we find that Esau sold something that was very important for a meal that was just enough to quench his appetite for a moment. Once it was gone he could never get it back. I personally feel that he sold out way too cheap.
The next few devotionals will be about people who sold out too cheap. I believe that many today are selling out too cheaply. They give up things they can never get back just to satisfy the appetite for the moment.

THE CHRISTIAN LIFESTYLE 5

1 Thessalonians 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.
When we live the Christian lifestyle we are supposed to set a good example to other Christians as well as to the rest of the world who is always watching.
I am amazed at the number of Christian people who think it is fine to do what the world does and go where the world goes and then think it will not effect their testimony.
Someone told me that I should go to the Casino and eat their buffet because it was very good and wasn't very expensive. I told them that I would not want to be seen going into any part of a casino. In the first place I don't want to contribute to their success in any way but if someone were to see me go in they would have no way of knowing that I was just going there to eat.
We are to abstain from all appearance of evil. Living the Christian lifestyle means abstaining from all appearance of evil

THE CHRISTIAN LIFESTYLE 4

1 Thessalonians 5:19 Quench not the Spirit.

THE CHRISTIAN LIFESTYLE SHOULD BE ONE RESPONSIVE TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
As Christians we should be responsive to the Holy Spirit. God does not usually speak to us in great miracles or earth shattering events but with the still small voice. We need to let the Spirit guide us daily and not just on Sunday morning.
Sometimes God will convict us that something is wrong and we quench the spirit to satisfy the flesh. We are to do just the opposite. We are to crucify the flesh and follow the leadership of the Spirit.
It is through the leadership of the Holy Spirit that we are able to study, to worship, to witness and thereby glorify the Father and the Son. The Christian lifestyle is one that will be led by the Holy Spirit

THE CHRISTIAN LIFESTYLE 3

1 Thessalonians 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
THE CHRISTIAN LIFESTYLE IS FILLED WITH THANKSGIVING.

Don't you just love to be around someone who is always griping and complaining? I didn't think so. Life is not really as bad for most of us as some people make it out to be. It is actually pretty great and amazing if you stop to think about it.

You know the type of people that I am talking about. It seems like they are always enjoying some kind of misery instead of being thankful for their blessings. I think it was Mark Twain who said, "Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." I agree with this statement.

We are all going to have hard times, bad days and unfortunate things happen to us. Sometimes we do feel like life is unfair and sometimes we all like to have a little pity party but this should be the exception rather than the rule.

God has so greatly blessed us and we should be thankful every day for those blessings. A thankful heart is a happy heart and a life filled with thanksgiving is a life filled with Joy.

The Christian lifestyle should be filled with thanksgiving.

THE CHRISTIAN LIFESTYLE 2

1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing.

A LIFESTYLE OF PRAYER

Prayer should not be something the Christian takes lightly. If you remember the disciples never asked Jesus to teach them to preach, or to teach or many of the other things that Christians do but they did ask Him to teach them how to pray. They realized how important prayer was.
Prayer is the way we pour out our hearts and thoughts to God. It is in times of prayer that we are open to His communication to us also. Prayer is as important to our spiritual life as air is to our physical life. When we don't have air for our bodies it is really hard on our physical bodies. The same is true for prayers and our spiritual life?
We need to pray individually. I don't mean that we are just to tell people we will pray for them. I believe we should follow through and actually pray to God on their behalf. We also need to pray collectively. We should pray as families and churches and even prayer groups and circles. There is power in prayer.
We need to pray faithfully, after all it is a part of the Christian Lifestyle.

THE CHRISTIAN LIFESTYLE 1

I Thessalonians 5:17-22 Pray without ceasing. (18) In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. (19) Quench not the Spirit. (20) Despise not prophesyings. (21) Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. (22) Abstain from all appearance of evil.

We hear a lot today about lifestyles. We are told that we should be tolerant of other cultures. I think it is important for us to learn more about the style of life we should be living.

It is easy to be caught up in current trends and one of the current trends is not to offend anyone no matter how much they stray from the teachings of God. Recently it seems that every culture and lifestyle is acceptable except the Christian Lifestyle.

Customs might change. Society certainly changes and the things that are accepted in public seem to change with time. One thing that does not change is God's Word. The whole world will pass away and none of it will change. The next few devotionals are going to be dealing with the Christian lifestyle. I hope you receive a blessing from them.

Broken Cisterns 2

Jeremiah 2:13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

INTRODUCTION: Water is a symbol of life, both carnal and eternal. In these verses of scriptures God speaks to Israel and declares that they have forsaken Him, the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns.
I can remember when people caught their water in cisterns. They would put gutters around the house and use them to direct the water from the house into the cistern. It was a big old concrete jug in buried in the ground.
Most people did it because they didn't have a choice. That was the only way they could store water. The problem is that everything on that roof would wash down into their drinking water. Anything that happened to climb or crawl in and fell in would stay right there in the water they drank.
Most people never thought of the impurities in their water. It is kind of the same with Spiritual water. Instead of getting spiritual refreshment directly from the Lord, all some people get is what comes from someone else that has caught something and stored it. They too have no idea of the impurities that might be in it.
It is important for us to know Jesus as our Lord and Savior and go directly to His Word. He is the living water and if we have Him we will never thirst.

Broken Cisterns 1

Jeremiah 2:13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.
INTRODUCTION: Water is a symbol of life, both carnal and eternal. In these verses of scriptures God speaks to Israel and declares that they have forsaken Him, the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns.
The first evil the people committed was forsaking God. We do that when we question the validity of the Bible. We do that when we decide we must become tolerant of ideas and cultures that are contrary to His Word.
God's Word is eternal and it is not going to change with the styles. I am afraid people have not only hewn out cisterns but they are broken cisterns.
Here is something to consider when we you begin to compromise the Word of God
NOTE:
We wallow in the mire of mediocrity, muck through the mud of moderation, and our sleepy souls slovenly slop through the superficial sloughs of self-satisfaction. And then we wonder why we don't feel as close to God as we should.

WANT OR NEED? 5

Philippians 4:19 But my God shall SUPPLY ALL YOUR NEED according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Psalm 23:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

I shall not want for rest-"He maketh me lie down in green pastures.
I shall not want for peace- "He leadeth me beside the still waters".
I shall not want for revival- "He restoreth my soul".
I shall not want for righteousness- Because it is His righteousness I am depending on.
I shall not be afraid of anything-Because He is with me and His rod and staff comfort me.
I shall not want for sustenance-"Because He prepares a table before me."
I shall not want for spiritual things because He anoints my head with oil.
I shall not want for refreshment because my cup runs over.
I shall not want for goodness and mercy for they will follow me all the days of my life.
I shall not worry about the future for I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
That pretty much takes care of my needs as well as my wants. How about you?

WANT OR NEED? 4

Philippians 4:19 But my God shall SUPPLY ALL YOUR NEED according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Psalm 23:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

A teacher was trying to drive home the importance of expanding the vocabulary. She said that if you repeat a word ten times it will be yours forever. A young coed in the back of the class was heard saying over and over, "Mike, Mike, Mike, Mike..."
She obviously wanted Mike to be hers forever. I don't know if she ever got Mike or not but I wonder if she had would she have been happy with what she got. There are many times we think of so many things that we want. We think if we just had this or if we just had that we would be happy. I can speak from experience in saying that getting what we want does not always make us happy.
It is sometimes like the dog that caught the skunk. He got what he wanted but he sure didn't want what he got.
I think we would all be better off if we would just pray "Not my will, but thy will be done." It is then that we get what we need

WANT OR NEED? 3

Philippians 4:19 But my God shall SUPPLY ALL YOUR NEED according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Psalm 23:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

"I really need a new cell phone."
That was a comment I heard a man make. At the time the man had no car, he was living in a house with no furniture and no utilities and had just started to work. His boss had to furnish his lunch each day until he got his first paycheck but he made that comment.
Sometimes I have heard people say other things like that and I am still amazed. I have a cell phone. I think maybe I was one of the last people in America to break down and get one. I love it. I like being in contact with my family on Facebook and I like following people I am interested in on twitter but I can honestly say I don't absolutely need a phone of any kind.
There are many things that make our life more convenient and more comfortable that we have come to think of as necessities when actually they are luxuries.
Not only have I learned that I have all I need. I feel that I am greatly blessed to have much of what I want. A comfortable place to live, heat and air conditioning, clean water to drink, decent clothes to wear, and so many other things that we take for granted. "The Lord is my Shepherd. I shall not want."

WANT OR NEED? 2

Philippians 4:19 But my God shall SUPPLY ALL YOUR NEED according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

Psalm 23:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

I have many times heard the excuse "Sunday is my only day off so I need it to rest" as an excuse for not attending church. I have also noticed that the same person might spend the day doing just about anything but resting.
God shall supply all our needs. We need a time to be fed spiritually. We need a time to fellowship with other Christians and to study God's Word together. We need to spend some time in worship, after all, that is what we were created for. We need to be where God wants us to be. We need to be working together with His church doing His work. He has provided a way for us to do that and He chose to do His work through the Churches.
We may want to sleep in. (I suggest an afternoon nap after the services.) We may want to visit relatives or go to the beach or fishing or to a ball game but we definitely do not need those things.
America is truly at a crossroads and we must really do some searching of our hearts to find out what it really is we need. I promise you all your true needs can be supplied by a God who created it all.

WANT OR NEED? 1

Philippians 4:19 But my God shall SUPPLY ALL YOUR NEED according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Ps 23:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

INTRODUCTION: We are living in a time and place that has been truly blessed. We have been blessed to the point that we have blurred the lines between wants and needs. What was once considered government charity has now been termed entitlements and people have surely come to feel that they are entitled to more than they need.
My son was visiting us the other day and my wife's birthday is approaching and he asked her, "Mom, is there anything you need that I can get you for your birthday." Her answer was, "Son, I really have everything I need."
It was the truth. She later remarked to me what a blessing it was to be able to say, "I have everything I need."
I am sure that as Christians, if we all examined what we have closely we would agree that we have everything we need. If someone were to ask me if there was anything in the world I wanted I might come up with a very long list. I am sure we all could.
Jesus is sufficient for my salvation, to comfort me, to give me peace and for so much more. I guess as Christians we have everything we truly need in Him.

Blockades 4

2Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

SALVATION IS OFFERED BY JESUS HIMSELF
Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.
The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin, he teaches us of Jesus and Jesus knocks on the door of our heart wanting us to invite Him in.
Salvation is voluntary.  God will not save you against your will.  Jesus will not beat down the door of your heart and force Himself on you.  You have to believe that He is who the Bible teaches that He is.  You have to believe that He has to the power to save you.  This is all voluntary but thankfully it is free.
God has placed many blockades on the road to Hell.  There are some I did not cover in detail.  The prayers of your family and friends, missionaries witnessing all over the world, preachers proclaiming the word of God,  Gospel Tracts placed and handed out for the lost to read and many more.  Why?
Because God wants everyone to turn around from that road to Hell and get on the straight and narrow path to Heaven by trusting Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

Blockades 3

2Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

THE CHURCH IS A BLOCKADE

Glorifying God is the main purpose of the church. The ministry of the church is to build up the saved and to reach the unsaved.

Acts 8:4-5 Therefore they that were scattered abroad went everywhere preaching the word. {5} Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.

Christianity and the Church is definitely under attack worldwide.  It seems that our educational system and much of our government is willing to tolerate just about any religion, with the exception of mainline Christianity.  In many parts of the world people are in danger of imprisonment or even death for openly practicing Christianity.  Thankfully it has not come to that in the United States, yet.

What those who attack the Church do not realize is that Bible Believing, Gospel Preaching, churches that truly believe the Word of God have the message that can keep them from going to Hell.

Remember, the scriptural New Testament churches that are true to the Bible are roadblocks on the way to Hell.

Blockades 2

2Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

THE WORD OF GOD IS A BLOCKADE

It reveals the way of salvation.

Romans 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

God didn't wait until we changed our lives.  He didn't cast us aside because we were sinners.  He loved us enough to send His own son to die in our place.

There are many who will go to Hell simply because they reject the salvation that Jesus has already bought for them.  Their pride will cause them to think they are good enough on their own or that they will eventually be good enough.

God's Word, the Bible is filled with events that led up to Jesus dying for us on the cross.  The Gospels give an account of Jesus and His life, His death, His burial, and His wonderful resurrection.

The Bible is a blockade on the road to Hell.

Blockades 1

2Peter 3:9  The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

INTRODUCTION:    Some people have the mistaken opinion that God is just waiting to get even with them and that no matter what they do they are doomed.  I personally believe that God has placed many blockades along the road to Hell.

We don't like to talk about Hell and it seems that when we do we speak of it we talk as if it is a mythological place or a state of mind.

There are a couple of things I really believe strongly and would like to share with you in the next few devotionals.  One thing is that Hell is a real place, a place of torment, and it will be filled with real people. The other thing I believe strongly is that God has made every provision for us to keep us from going there.

Because God is a God of love and Grace and His mercy endures forever He has placed blockades on the road to hell.  He has made provision in many ways to make sure that you must make the decision. If a person goes to hell he goes in spite of the barriers that God has placed before him.

LIFE STORIES 5

Psalms 90:9 For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told.

LIFE IS A GIFT

The greatest that God give us is life.  He first gives us this physical life and then He gives us eternal life through His Son Jesus.

There are many gifts that God gives man but to all of us he gives us the three greatest.

He gives us hope.  I am an incurable optimist.  I look forward to each day with great excitement.  A few times in my life my heart condition has been such that doctors have thought that I would not pull through and if I did I wouldn't last long.  When you are faced with that kind of diagnosis it kind of makes you realize that every day is special and every day is a gift.  I wish I had known that even as a child growing up.  I have no idea when the Lord will come back or when I will die but I intend to get every bit of good I can out of every day He gives me.  I do appreciate each day as a gift.

He gives us faith.  He has given me a small measure of faith and by exercising it I have found it to be enough. I only have a little faith, but it is in a Great God and I have found Him to be sufficient for my every need.

He gives us charity (Love).  We must first love Him. Then I think it is important to love ourselves because He is in us and is our creator.  We are then to love our family and our friends.  The hardest part is to love our enemies and strangers but why should it be so hard to share it. It is a gift and it didn't cost us anything.

What kind of life story are you writing?  It is my prayer that these past few devotionals have caused you to think about the obituary that you are writing for yourself. What you do now is what people remember.
