A CHOSEN PEOPLE

1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

Whenever you feel insignificant take out your Bible and read this verse.  It should make you aware of how special you are to our Creator.   If you are saved you have been chosen as an ambassador of the Lord Jesus Christ and should be representing Him in this world.  When people see you they should see Christ working in you.

If they are not saved, you are the one who can go before God's throne of grace and pray for them and their infirmities.  You are a part of a Royal Priesthood that has access through our High Priest Jesus Christ.  Now that is something special.

You are important in God's plan and He has great work for you to do.  You have no right as a Christian to feel insignificant.  Instead you have a duty to show forth His praises and reveal to the world how He called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.

A SPIRITUAL HOUSE

1 Peter 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

We sometimes forget that the Church Jesus is building is not in fact a building.  It is made up of those people who accept Him and are obedient to His teachings.

We are a spiritual House.  Living stones that make up the greatest living organization in the history of the World.  We should be excited to be a part of this great body.

We are a Holy Priesthood.  Saved by God's marvelous grace and we should be offering our reasonable service as an acceptable sacrifice to God.  Just what is reasonable service?  Jesus paid our sin debt on the cross and offers salvation to all who believe.  Is this just worth an hour or two each week or is it worth a dedicated life, spreading the message of salvation to a world that is so much in need of a Savior?

I believe if you really think about it you will find the right answer in your heart.

GROWING UP IN JESUS

1 Peter 2:1 Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, (2) As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

Sometimes the number of immature Christians we encounter is surprising and more than a little frightening.  The sad thing is that they are not even aware that they are babes in Christ.  Sadly I am not talking about those that have just been saved.  Many of the most immature Christians I have met have been in the church for ages.

They are focused on themselves.  If you think about it one attribute of a child is that they think everything is about them and they are the center of the universe.  When they don't get their way they become angry, they attack others, they are envious and they think they look better by putting other people down.  Does this sound like anyone you know, that is, besides children.

I have known many people like this and still they did not desire the sincere milk of the Word so that they could grow.  They desired the milk because that is all that they could digest.

As we grow in grace and begin to spiritually mature we should be able to digest more of the Bible, the meat of the Word.  As we become more mature we realize that our focus should not be on our self, or even on others but should be on Jesus.

Hebrews 11:39-40 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: (40) God having provided some better thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect.

I believe these verses refer to the time when Jesus shall return and we shall be made like Him.

1th 4:16-17 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: (17) Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Men of faith have served boldly, even unto death, since this book was first penned.  There is no way to name them all here but one thing we must remember.  Even though we might think of these men as great men they did not have a thing that we don't have.  They just used the faith that God gave them.
Don't try to have great faith.  Just exercise the faith you have in a Great God.

Hebrews 11:32 And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:

We see these great names written in the Hall of Faith and we know that this is not an end to the list.  If the writer of the Book of Hebrews were alive today he might mention Peter who even though he once denied Christ repented and was faithful to the end.

He might mention Steven who was stoned and looked up into Heaven seeing a vision of Christ ready to receive him as he died.

He might mention so many of the new testament saints who gave their lives for the cause of Christ or John who was in the Spirit on the Lord's day and saw great visions of things to come.

The Bible is filled with men of faith and if we are going to turn our nation around our churches also must be filled with people of faith.

Hebrews 11:31 By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace.

This verse teaches me that anyone can be saved by faith.  Even Rahab the harlot was saved when she received the spies sent in to spy on Jericho.

Never underestimate the seriousness of your sin.  Sin is sin and God frowns upon all our sin.  The great news is that regardless of the seriousness of our sin, "the blood of Jesus Christ will cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

There is none so righteous that he doesn't need Jesus as his savior and there is none so sinful that Jesus can not save him.

It is by faith that we trust in Jesus and in Jesus alone.

BY FAITH 17

Hebrews 11:30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days.
Many of God's promises are conditional and need to be followed to the letter.  I personally believe that we would see a lot more of God's miracles if we would just believe God's Word and take it to heart.

James 5:14 Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with OIL in the name of the Lord

I have been in the ministry since 1978 and I have yet to receive a call from someone in my congregation who was sick and asked for this to be done.  I must confess that even with some severe health problems of my own I have not done it either.

I sometimes wonder if we might see more of the sick miraculously healed if we would just follow God's instructions to the letter.

I am not talking about some televangelist running around with oil and anointing everyone he comes in contact with.  I am talking about a member of the Lord's Church calling on the pastor and deacons to come and perform this duty.  If you will look closely at the verse, it says that the person who is sick has to do the calling.

Maybe we don't see great miracles like the falling of the walls of Jericho because we don't follow God's instructions exactly the way He gave them to us.

BY FAITH 16

Hebrews 11:29 By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned.

I can only imagine the faith it took to march through that opening in the Red Sea.  I remember watching the movie "The Ten Commandments" for the first time many years ago and the reality of the walls of water on both sides of them really became real to me as I watched.  It was most certainly an act of faith for them to move through the sea as the waters parted.

Many skeptics try to explain away the miracle of the parting of the Red Sea.  They don't spend quiet as much time on the pillar of fire or the pillar of cloud that went before the children of Israel.  Some have said that the place where they crossed was actually very shallow, only several inches of water.  If that is true then there was still a great miracle when God drowned the entire Egyptian army in only a few inches of water.

We should be less busy trying to disprove the miracles of the Bible and busier trusting God for the miracles that He can perform in our lives today if we will only live by faith.

Hebrews 11:25-26 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; (26) Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompense of the reward.

Our lives are filled with choices every day.  If we are honest about it we are where we are today mostly because of the choices we made earlier in life.  I have made some terrible choices in my life and even now I am paying the price with my health.  I have made the right choices too.  Those I made by placing my trust in God have always led me in the right direction.

In this day of instant gratification it might seem hard to resist the pleasures of sin for a season but if we know the scriptures and we trust God for the outcome we will understand that what God has in store for us is much greater than any pleasure that the world has to offer.

It takes faith for us to trust God's promises.  Be sure and study the Bible, God's Word.  It will teach you about God.  It is much easier to trust someone that you know very well.

Hebrews 11:23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment

When all the babies were being killed by Pharoah,  Moses was hidden by his parents.  I am sure that took much faith because if they had been discovered they too would probably have been killed.

Pharaoh's daughter found Moses and raised him in Pharaoh's house making her a part of what Pharaoh feared most.  It was these acts of faith that made it possible for Moses to grow up and lead God's people out of bondage and to the promised land.

Even though Moses himself never entered the promised land he was used in a great way by God.

We never know when we are going through difficulty how much God might be preparing us for something great in the future.  We must trust Him, and put ourselves completely in His hands.  Now that takes faith.

BY FAITH 13

Hebrews 11:22 By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones.

I love reading about the life of Joseph. He was certainly not always dealt with fairly.  First he was sold into slavery, then he was unjustly cast into prison but he did not become bitter toward God.  He remained faithful to God in all matters and because of his faith all the descendants of Abraham were saved, as well as a multitude of others who would have died in that great famine if they had not listened to Joseph.

Even as he was on his deathbed Joseph had faith that his family would return to the land that Abraham was promised.  I am not sure if he realized that the children of Israel would be multiplied into a great nation at that time but he knew it would be long after his death when they returned.

He instructed them to carry his bones home.  I'm not sure what will happen to my bones but I do know that I will have a new body in my home in heaven some day.  That is what is important to me.

BY FAITH 12

Hebrews 11:17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son.

I can't imagine the faith that it took for Abraham to place his only son upon that altar.  He obviously believed God.  He believed in His person, His power, and His promises.  God had promised that Isaac's descendants would be that great nation that He had promised Abraham.

How could this happen if Isaac were dead?  Abraham believed God enough to believe that with God all things are possible.  He knew that God would keep His promise even if He had to raise Isaac from the dead.

We can look back and see how God kept His promise.  We too can look back and see that God's love for us was so great that He did not hesitate to let His only begotten Son die in our place.  He did raise Him from the dead.

We don't need to have faith in what God has done for us in the past.  We also need to have faith that He will keep His promises to us in the future.

BY FAITH 11

Hebrews 11:13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

The people mentioned in the previous verses believed God's promises.  Sometimes our whole lives would be better if we would just believe God and accept His promises as being true.

We would have a whole lot more peace and joy in our lives if we would just embrace the promise of God that He has something better in store for those who love Him.

We become too comfortable in this world and want to hang on to it.  Instead of Pilgrims and strangers we want to become permanent citizens and we forget that God has a far better place prepared for us.

When we really embrace the promises of God we will become homesick for Heaven.

BY FAITH 10

Romans 4:3 For what saith the scripture? ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, and it was counted unto him for righteousness

What is faith if it is not just believing God.  Abraham put his faith in God in many instances and I can not even imagine the faith it took to prepare his only son to sacrifice to God.  God provided Himself a sacrifice and Isaac was saved.

Today our faith must be practiced by believing as well.

Acts 16:31 And they said, BELIEVE ON THE LORD Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

Many today are trying to complicate salvation.  They try to incorporate rituals, rites, and rules
and the bible clearly says

Ephesians 2:8 For BY GRACE ARE YE SAVED through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Don't just believe what someone tells you.  Believe God and the only way you can do that is if you  read His word, the Bible.

Remember that it is impossible to please God without faith.

Hebrews 11:11 Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

We all remember what happened when Sarah tried to take matters in her own hand.  Much of the turmoil in the world today is result of those efforts.

That doesn't take away from the miracle that allowed Abraham and Sarah to have a child when  they were up in years and past childbearing age.

When God makes a promise He keeps it.  Like Sarah we often give up way to soon and try to help God out.  Here is something you need to learn if you will follow God by faith.  God does not need our help..He wants us to be obedient by faith.

This does not mean that God does not use us.  He definitely had a purpose for Abraham and Sarah. A great nation was born and through that great nation our Savior did come.  God will always keep His promises to us.  He will keep them in His time and in His way.

It takes faith to trust Him to do that.

BY FAITH 8

Heb 11:9-10 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: (10) For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

Abraham was not looking for what the world had to offer.  He was looking for what God had to offer.
I have a confession to make.  I enjoy life.  I go to bed each night looking forward to the next day and what it might hold for me.  I try to make the best of each moment. Sometimes I wonder if maybe I don't feel too comfortable here in this world when I really do realize that God has a better place waiting for me.

I believe in Heaven and I believe that Heaven is a real place and will be inhabited by real people who have been saved by God's grace.  When I focus on what God has for me in the future, what I have here in the present pales by comparison.

When I focus on Heaven and upon God and being in His presence it doesn't make life in this world any less pleasant.  I think that it is Faith that makes looking forward to that city while we live in this world a more pleasant experience.

BY FAITH 7

Hebrews 11:8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

There is a lot said in this Chapter about Abraham.  Abraham was a man who believed God and showed his faith in God in many instances.  While some of the others might seem more dramatic this one has always really impressed me.  He gathered all his belongings and his family and left all that he was familiar with (except for Lot) and began a lifetime journey without knowing where He was going.

So many times we don't want to step out on faith. We expect God to reveal all the details to us when he calls us.  I learned a long time ago that is just not how it works.  God seems to always say to me, "You start.  You take the next step and then I will reveal what you need to know as you need to know it."

Sometimes it can be kind of frightening.  What we have to learn is that the destination is not important.  The dangerous of the journey are of no consequence.  If God says go...He will always go with us.  That is what is important.

BY FAITH 6

Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

All of mankind was preserved because Noah had faith and trusted God.  I am sure it took much more faith than we can even imagine.  He was commanded to build a boat on dry land.  He was told it would rain for 40 days an 40 nights even though up to that point it had never rained but a mist had come up out of the earth and watered the ground.

His work wasn't easy.  He didn't have a sawmill or power tools or folk lifts to raise the heavy beams...all he had was Faith and his family.  Sometimes we might get frustrated because we think we don't have what we need to please God.  Remember Faith is enough and if we have faith and our family that is pretty great.

It wasn't a hurry up job.  It took Noah 120 years to build the Ark.  When we serve God by faith we must realize that God will give us time to complete the task.

You might not be charged with the great task of building an Ark to save all mankind but you are charged with the task of spreading the message of Jesus to a lost and dying world.  You have greater tools, greater understanding, and just as good of an opportunity to serve God with your faith.  Put it to use.  Who knows when it might start raining?

BY FAITH 5

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Read this verse very carefully.  It does not say that without faith it is hard or difficult to please God.  This verse tells us that it is impossible to please him without faith.

First of all we must believe that He is God.  It is not enough to believe that He is a god.  We must believe that He is exactly Who the Bible proclaims Him to be.  He is God and there is none else.
If we are to receive the benefit of God's promises we must realize (by faith) that God has our best interest at heart in all matters.  Sin is sin because it is bad for us, it is not bad for us because it is sin.  If it were for our benefit it would not be sin.

We must realize that God created all things.  It is when man takes them to extreme and perverts them that they become sin.

If we diligently seek God and seek His will (we must pray and study our Bible) He is a Rewarder of us.

Hebrews 11:5 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

Ge 5:24 And ENOCH walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

What a beautiful story.  Enoch and God walking together and I can imagine Enoch thinking "It's getting late.  I need to go home"  and God saying, "You can just go home with Me."

I personally believe that this is a picture of Jesus' return to take His people out of the world before the great tribulation period. He will take those who are walking with Him on to his home to stay.

I have been invited to places that really impressed me.  I have been impressed by their beauty, by their vastness and by their value.  They were nothing compared to the place that God has prepared for those who love Him.

Faith should make us want to walk with God.  Faith should assure us that at the end of the day God has a wonderful home and He will translate us into something more beautiful that we can not imagine except by faith.

BY FAITH 3

Hebrews 11:4 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.

If we read in the book of Genesis of the account of Abel's sacrifice we can see that his offering was truly by faith.  I believe it shows the seriousness of sin and it is a prophetic picture of The Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world.

While today we are not required to give blood sacrifices we should by faith accept that Jesus was the fulfillment of the law and was the sacrifice required for our salvation.

Since Jesus is already made the ultimate sacrifice for us it certainly requires faith for us to offer our lives as a living sacrifice to God.  It takes faith to put God first in our lives.  It takes faith to be a witness for Jesus and tell others about Him.

It is only when we accept Jesus by faith and offer ourselves as servants of God that we can really offer that more excellent sacrifice.  It takes faith to do that.

Hebrews 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

Yes, it takes faith to believe that all things were created by God. It means that we have to swallow our pride and realize that we are not in control.
It seems to me that it takes a lot more faith to believe that everything just happened by accident than it does to believe in our Creator.  Our universe is too balanced,  there is too much harmony in nature.  Man is fearfully and wonderfully made.  I have faith that we are created in the image of God.  I could never have enough faith to believe that all this just happened.

The changing of the seasons,  the sunrises and sunsets to me are there to strengthen my faith in an Almighty God.  The beauty of the sunrise or sunset and the power of the storm all increase my faith.  The vastness of the oceans and nations and the intricate detail of the snowflake sometimes causes me to be in awe of our great and mighty God.

Even the faith that we have is a gift from God.  Let us make sure to unwrap it and use it to bring  Glory to Him.

BY FAITH 1

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

While the whole world thinks that seeing is believing we as Christians know that believing is seeing.

I love reading the stories in the Bible about the men who truly trusted God and served Him by Faith.
God has not changed since the Old Testament days. His power and His presence have not diminished one bit since creation.  I have learned a lot of things since I first started trying to walk the Christian walk but one of the most important was that I don't have to see the end of the path that God has set me on.  It is only important that I take the next step and He will show me the way as I need to know it.

This chapter in the Bible is sometimes referred to as the Hall of Faith.  It mentions men and women of faith and gives examples of how God used them for His purpose because they believed Him.

I hope you get a blessing from these devotionals and I hope your faith is increased by them.  Just remember that we don't need great faith.  We just need to have faith in a Great God.
