FIRST THINGS FIRST

INTRODUCTION:
(I did a series on this a couple of years ago but I decided to revisit the subject)

Zig Ziglar tells a story about cooking a ham. He noticed that everyone in the family always cut the shank end of the ham off as the very first step in cooking the ham. When he asked his wife why she did that she told him that was what you were supposed to do to cook a ham. She explained that she had watched her mother cook hundreds of hams and she always cut the shank end off before she did anything else. Zig, being the curios type decided to ask his mother in law why. She explained that it was just what you did when you cooked a ham. She had seen her mother do it hundreds of times and that was the way to do it.
Zig wanted to get to the bottom of this so he called his mother's grandma and asked, "Why do you always cut the shank end of the ham off first thing before you start to cook it?"

"That's simple," she said, "My roasting pan is a little small and it won't fit if I don't cut off the shank end first."

Sometimes we do things in certain ways and we really don't understand why we do them that way. Sometimes the first step is not as important as we thought it was.

Sometimes the first step in anything is very important. The devotionals this week will be on First Things. I hope you enjoy them and get a blessing from them. While you are thinking about how things are going ask yourself if you are sometimes leaving out the most important steps in have a spirit filled walk with Jesus.
