GOD'S LOVE WAS COMMENDED AT THE CROSSGOD'S LOVE WAS COMMENDED AT THE CROSS

(Romans 5:8)  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

I have visited a lot of people in my ministry who would say that they hoped to get saved some day. It seems that some think that they have to somehow clean themselves up a little before God will have mercy on them.

The problem is that we can't clean ourselves up. Our righteousness is as filthy rags in the sight of God and there is nothing that we can do to clean us up.  The only thing that can make us right with God is Jesus.

1John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS.

The only thing that can clean up the sin from a sinners life is Jesus and the fact that He died for our sins and shed His blood for us.

GOD'S LOVE IS MANIFESTED IN CHRIST

(1 John 4:9)  In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

When we read the Psalms we can tell that David had a deep and abiding love for God and we can also tell that David knew that God loved him without measure.

Many of the prophets seldom mentioned the Grace of God or the love of God.  They were more focused on justice and judgment. Many people today have trouble recognizing that God is Love.

That love was made real to us when He sent Jesus to be the sacrifice for our sins.  What can make His love more real to us than that.  He loved us enough to send His only begotten Son to take our sin punishment for us.

There are a lot of things in this world that I am not sure of.  There are a lot of things in the Bible that I don't understand but there is one thing I know for sure.  God loves me and He loves you too.  He loves all men enough that He sent His Son to die in their place.

THE ROCK 3

Matthew 16:16-18 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. {17} And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. {18} And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Many people take these verses to mean that the Church was to be built upon Peter.  Actually the Rock that the church is built upon is the fact that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Christ is the very foundation of our Christian faith.  He is the Son of the living God.  He is Perfect, "as a lamb without spot or blemish". His passion for us was the greatest "while we were yet sinners He died for us."  His position is the highest, He sits at the right hand of the father.

He makes intercession for us before our Heavenly Father.  The Rock that the church is built upon is the fact, as revealed by the Holy Spirit, "Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God."

THE ROCK 2

Deuteronomy 32:4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

Whenever you decide that you might want to second guess God you need to remember that His work is perfect.  His perfect works make him worthy of our praise, worship and yes, our obedience.  You might be the smartest man in the world, or at least think you are right up there with the elite thinkers but God is perfect.  You are not.

Many think that God is not fair in His treatment of man but God is more than fair, He is merciful. I personally think it is wonderful that we don't get what we deserve.  I know that I could not stand it.

When you decide that you want to twist or bend the Word of God just remember the Ten Commandments.  They were written on stone.  You can't bend them or twist them, you can only break them.  God's Truth never changes.

THE ROCK 1

Psalms 62:2 He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.

In the area where I live it is not unusual for people to have doors that won't close right. There are cracks in the walls and sometimes in the concrete slab which is the foundation of the house.  Why is this such a problem?  In our area a big portion of the land is what they call Yazoo Clay.  Yazoo Clay is very unstable and is subject to change over time and with different weather conditions.

A person doesn't have to build his life on the sand to have it crack and become unstable.  If He builds on anything other than the Rock which is Jesus Christ he can expect to have an unstable life.

Jesus doesn't change with the seasons, the weather conditions or with public opinion.  He is the same yesterday, today and forever.

I become concerned when I read news from some denomination that has changed their stance on Biblical teaching and is straying from the Bible so that they can reach more people.  Reach more people for what?  We must stand on the firm foundation of Jesus as the Christ.  The Bible is the Word of God and God means it.

Build on the Rock, Jesus Christ, so that your life is not built on something that will certainly crack.

Getting Close to God By Being Spirit Filled

James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
Ephesians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

When we are filled with the Spirit it means shutting out the things of the world and concentrating on the things of God.  This is not easy in today's fast paced and wicked world but when we do all the things mentioned in the previous five devotionals it will bring us closer to walking in the Spirit.  We will have a closer relationship with God and we will be more aware of His presence in our lives.

Being filled with the Spirit brings joy into our life.  Many people think the ideal is to find happiness but happiness is fleeting.  Joy is something that is so hard to explain that you only recognize it when you have it.  God says we can have joy unspeakable.

When we are filled with the Spirit we will bring Glory to God in our lives and that should be the ultimate goal for every Christian who is seeking a closer walk with Him.

Getting Close to God By Reading The Bible

James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

How can you trust someone and draw near to them if you do not know them.  Many people know more about what someone has told them about the Bible than what the Bible has told them personally. If all you get from the Bible is what you get in Sunday School and from the preacher then you are not getting spiritually fed they way you should.

As you study God's Word, the Bible, on your own the Holy Spirit will guide you to a better and closer relationship with God.

The Bible reveals Jesus, and our need for a  Savior to us.  It is like a mirror in many ways showing us the things in our life that could use some improvement and some changes.  It also reveals God and His grace and mercy to us helping us to trust Him more.

The Word of God causes us to think on spiritual things such as heaven, hell and eternity.  It is a personal letter to each of us from God.  Though it doesn't have private interpretations, it does have messages that are personal for your life.

If you would be closer to God make sure that you spend some time in the Bible.

Getting Close to God By Trusting Him

James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
Job 13:15 Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.

Salvation is eternal.  Those who have trusted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior will never perish.  This must be infuriating and frustrating for Satan who hates mankind and wishes him nothing but misery.

God is on our side and He wants what is best for us.  It is important for us to trust Him if we are to live victorious lives walking with Him daily.  Many times in my life I have hesitated and asked God, "Are you really sure about this Lord?"  In the end I have always found that trusting Him is the best thing I can do.

Distrust is an affront to God and Satan rejoices in doubt, discouragement, and distrust.

If you really want to draw closer to God you must learn to trust Him.  If you are to trust Him you must study His Word, the Bible, and so that you might know Him better.

Getting Close to God Through Prayer

James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
1 Thessalonians 5:17-18 Pray without ceasing.(18) In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
If we are to truly draw near to God we must have a powerful prayer life and prayer itself brings power. Sometimes we might not feel like praying but those are exactly the times we should pray. God knows our hearts and every thought and intent of our heart.  Even when we don't know what to say God knows our heart and just having our minds tuned to Him allows the Holy Spirit to help us communicate with Him.

Prayer brings consecration and helps to insulate us from the temptations that are in the world ready to lead us away from Him and into sinful situations.

Prayer brings us victory.  Victory in the small things in life gives us confidence and increases our faith and then we begin to gain victory in the big issues in or lives.

Nothing in the world makes Satan tremble like the bended knees of God's children in sincere and earnest prayer.  If you would draw nearer to God then spend time in prayer.

Getting Close to God By Attending Church

James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some ; but exhorting : and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Attending church helps us grow near to God by being with others who also have a desire to grow spiritually. God's word is preached so that we might receive reproof and instruction as well as inspiration.

The Holy Spirit convicts and guides us to the truth from God's Word.  If the Bible is being preached you should be able to take something from the services that will help you have a closer walk with God all week.

You will find that you are encouraged by others that are also seeking a closer walk with God and it is great to know that there are many others in the same place spiritually as you are.

The world is becoming a darker place and a true Bible believing and Bible preaching church should be a place where you can find light.

If you would grow closer to God make sure that you are attending a scriptural New Testament Church on a regular basis.

Getting Close to God 1

James 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

In this verse of scripture we are told that if we strive to be close to God, he will draw us even closer to Him.  There are a lot of people who say they would like to be closer to God but they seem to want God to do the moving.

God doesn't change.  We, however, can change the way we live, the way we act, and the way we relate to God. Maybe it is time for us to consider what we need to do to help us to draw nearer to God.

The next few devotionals will deal with drawing nearer to God.  Before you read and study them I must warn you though, drawing near to God will change your life.

WE SHOULD BE MOVED WITH COMPASSION

Matthew 9:36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

Jesus had compassion on the hungry multitude, both the physically hungry and the spiritually hungry.  We too should be moved with compassion.

We should have compassion for those less fortunate and do what we can to help them.  I am a firm believer that the welfare state in our country is a destructive force.  It is far more compassionate to give people a hand than it is to give them a handout.  I am not saying that there aren't times when we must charitably give to people. Many people find themselves in dire straits through no fault of their own.

I am saying how much more compassionate it is to teach someone to take care of themselves than it is to just take care of them.

We should be moved to minister to others.  Sometimes our compassion may lead us into a special ministry.  Visiting the elderly in a nursing home or working with disabled veterans are great ministries and all you need is a compassionate heart and some time.  Mentoring young people is a wonderful ministry, especially with so many without a proper family environment.

We should be moved by compassion for the lost.  It is easy to complain about the crime and all the sin in the world but what are we doing to help with the problem.  If we have compassion on the lost we will tell them about Jesus and His wonderful plan of Salvation.

WE SHOULD BE MOVED BY GODLY FEAR

Acts 24:24-25  And after certain days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, which was a Jewess, he sent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Christ. {25} And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.

We should be moved with conviction of the sin in our life.  Unlike Felix we should make things right with God at this time and not try to wait for a convenient season.  What could be a more convenient than right now.

Once we are moved by God to be convicted (strongly convinced of the seriousness) of our sins we should be moved to repentance.  We hear the word repent a lot.  What it really means is a change of direction.  Repentance should bring about a change of heart so strong that it cause a change of our direction.  Instead of moving away from God we will move toward Him.

The closer we move toward God, the closer we move to righteousness.  Righteousness can only be found and achieved through Jesus Christ.

Don't wait for a convenient season.  Move toward God now.

WE SHOULD BE MOVED BY OUR FAITH

Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.

We need to be moved by having faith in God's warnings.  When Noah built the Ark it had never rained before, a mist came up from the ground and watered the Earth.  Noah believed God's warning and built the Ark.  The whole human race was saved because Noah believed God was going to send a flood.  Only His family survived, therefore, we are all descendants of Noah.

We also need to be moved by faith in God's promises.  Just as with a warning, a promise will come to pass.  Many of God's promises are conditional.  If we really have faith we will accept the conditions.
Always remember that it is God's desire to bless you and for you to have the best.  He has let us know the way to have the very best through His promises in the Bible.  Sometimes it takes faith not to settle for what we think is good and lose what God says is best.

WE SHOULD BE MOVED BY THE SPIRIT

Judges 13:24-25 And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and the LORD blessed him. (25) And the spirit of the LORD began to move him at times in the
camp of Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol.

2 Peter 1:21  For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake moved by the Holy Ghost.

Sometimes we know the Spirit is moving us to speak to someone.  Maybe it is to share the gospel, maybe it is to encourage them, and maybe it is to gently rebuke them for some sin.  So often we struggle to keep from saying something when it is really time to allow the Spirit to move us to speak.
There are also times when the Spirit moves us to act and we do nothing.  We might be afraid or timid.  We might not want to make a commitment or there may be some other reason.  When the Spirit of God leads us to act we should act.  God will not lead us to do something that He will not help us do.

We should let the Spirit move us toward worship of God.  The best definition I have ever heard of Worship is : an overflowing adoration.  So many times we meet and sing, listen to the preaching, have an invitation and go home without ever worshiping.  If we are sensitive to the leading of the Spirit we will be drawn into worshipful experience.

WE SHOULD BE MOVED BY GOD

2 Chronicles 18:31 And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, that they said, It the king of Israel. Therefore they compassed about him to fight: but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped him; and God moved them from him.

We should pray for God to remove the obstacles that keep us from serving Him.  The obstacles are many and sometimes they are so overwhelming that we can't work our way around them on our own.  Sometimes calling out to God for Him to remove the obstacles is the only way.  God doesn't want anything standing in the way of our serving Him.  You have to be careful when you ask God to remove an obstacle you might be asking Him to remove an opportunity.

We should ask God to move our enemies. You notice that I didn't say remove them.  It is imperative that we pray for our enemies and strive to win them to the Lord. If we pray for God to move them and to change their hearts they will no longer be our enemies but will become our Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

We should pray for God to move in our own hearts and give us a burden for the lost and a burning desire to serve Him better.  When God moves us it is always in the right direction.

WHAT SHOULD MOVE US?

Psalms 10:4-7 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts. (5) His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he puffeth at them. (6) He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity. (7) His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.

It seems that we live in a time when people are looking for some sort of moving experience.  They want music to move them or they want books or TV or other moving experiences.  One of the problems with many people is that they are looking for everything to move them but what they should be moved by.

The upcoming series of devotionals are on things that should move us.  Too often we are stationary or stagnant when we should be moved by a love for the Lord to go forward and serve Him.  I hope you receive a blessing from the devotionals.

WARNING 4 - JESUS WANTS YOU TO HAVE A GOOD LIFE

John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly

When I was younger I thought that the entire Bible was written just to keep me from having a good time.  I thought there were many things in life that I wanted and they would bring me happiness.

I could not have been wronger.  Sin never brings lasting happiness and it certainly doesn't bring us everlasting joy.  I can personally testify to the fact that I have a much more joyful and much fuller life since I have tried to follow Jesus and to conform myself to His Word.

God loves you. While Satan wants to lead you into sin and rob you of your joy, and yes even kill you, Jesus wants you to have life and have it more abundantly.

My warning to you today is that if you are not trying to follow Jesus you are headed in the wrong direction, turn around.

WARNING 3 - SATAN IS YOUR ENEMY

1Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a ROARING LION, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

Satan is real.  He is the enemy of all, even those who worship him.  He hates mankind and his desire is to have all to reject Jesus Christ and to reject God.

He disguises himself
2Corinthians 11:14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an ANGEL OF LIGHT.

No drunkard envisions himself in the gutter or in a rehab facility when he takes the first drink. No drug addict has the dream as a child of dying of an overdose.

Satan gradually leads people down the paths of destruction.  He never tells you that a little immorality will lead to a ruined life.  He paints a picture of fun, excitement and pleasure.  While these things might last for a while, like the Prodigal Son, too often they lead to a ruined life that can only be redeemed at the Father's House.

Even if you are saved Satan will still trouble you.  He wants to ruin your testimony and try to make a mockery out of your Christian life.

WARNING 2 -GOD IS NOT MOCKED

Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; GOD IS NOT MOCKED: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Many today are heading headlong into sin and trying to rationalize their actions.  Some say that the Bible is outdated.  Some try to take it out of context and whitewash the sins that are mentioned.

This is a dangerous thing. God does not change. He is perfect and there is no need for Him to adjust for modern day thinking.  I can not imagine that He is not angry and disappointed with a nation that has expelled Him from school, Barred His commandments from public places, began to worship the creation and creatures instead of the Creator and now they are trying to redefine sin.

Our Supreme Court has taken it upon themselves to rule on issues of morality and sin (and usually with devastating results as in Roe Vs Wade) while virtually ignoring the desires of the majority of the citizens.

Danger, Turn Around America.  We are not far from where Sodom was when God poured out fire from Heaven and destroyed it.

Warning-1

Ezekiel 3:17 Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.

There is a bridge out on the road ahead and there are cars that are unaware of it.  A man stands at the edge of the road and holds up a sign, "Danger, Turn Around".  The people keep speeding by and head straight on to their impending doom. Some might slow down at the last minute but most will drive over the edge.  Perhaps there will be a few who will stop and see what the danger is.  Maybe the man would be more effective if he would have written "Bridge Out" on the sign.

Sometimes our preaching is much the same.  We warn of sin, we warn of danger and we might even warn of God's judgement but when we get specific people seem to not only continue to ignore us but they say we are behind the times.  We are old fashioned or even worse...we are filled with hate.

In the devotionals this week I hope to mention some of the dangers we face today, especially in America.  We are a country that has been blessed far above any other in history but I feel like holding a sign that says, "Danger, Turn Around."

I hope you get a blessing out of these devotionals.

DECEPTION 5

Ephesians 5:6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
1Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a ROARING LION, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

Today we are being bombarded with all sorts of beliefs under the banner of Christianity.  Different groups have different ideas about what the church should do and what the church should be.  Many think because the standards of the world have changed that the standards of the church should change with them.

God doesn't change.  His word doesn't change. I am amazed at the acceptance of things, within the churches, that God's word is clear about.

Possibly that is why we are not experiencing  revival in our nation.  If we can not even get the churches to believe the Word of God and we allow Satan to deceive us in what is right and what is wrong, how can we expect to reach the world for Christ.
